My work manipulates the picture plane, leaving parts unpainted or unprimed. By fracturing the pictorial surface my paintings inhabit two disparate modes of being, namely objecthood and painterly illusion. Cropping the image enhances the minuteness of the moment, a quick glance at a moment in time as it begins to dissipate.

On display is the evidence from the last 3 years of Kendall Johnson's reawakening and return to their roots of pattern and repetition. From large densely packed drawings with graphite, to small watercolors focusing on color, "Drawing the Line" shows the journey of an artist returning to form. Moving from a printmaking background to strictly drawing, Kendall brings new ideas and techniques to their drawings. Asking questions and finding answers in the process of drawing is their main approach to any drawing. Every drawing starts with a question - If I do this and do that, what happens next? Drawing is a process of questioning and attempting to answer.

The Proxy War Monument series reflects the psychological consequences of the global pandemic, civil unrest, and challenging times we are each trying to navigate our own way through. Some of these images are capriccios, or fanciful compositions that show imaginary monuments to conflict and disorder. Others are portraits. Several have no clear origin or destination for their inspiration or content. Collectively, these images document the impact of global turmoil, political instability, social division, and general anxiety on my mental and emotional state.
