The College’s proud history of providing educational opportunities to the people of Northeast Kansas is inextricably linked to the community of Highland. Throughout its proud history, the College owes its existence to the people of Highland who worked so hard and gave so much to keep it open in hard times. And there have been many hard times. These can be most appreciated by reading former sociology instructor Arlyn Parish’s book, History of Highland Community College.
Located in the rural northeast corner of Kansas, the Highland community of 800 provides the stereotypical small-town environment that is highly conducive to getting to know your neighbor and having time to concentrate on your studies and personal development. The town is ideally located to provide this small-town idyllic setting while also having easy access to larger communities – Hiawatha is 15 minutes away, while St. Joseph, MO is a half-hour drive, Topeka is an hour and a half, as is Kansas City and Omaha, NE.
