It was a time to remember and relive some college memories on Saturday at Highland Community College as the annual Alumni Day weekend took place and several former Scotties converge upon campus, along with the current Scotties and the Highland Community.
The festivities got rolling in the morning with an event that started just the year before and was a huge hit; Scottie football minicamp for kids. The Highland football coaching staff along with several players worked with 20+ kids who came to the camp held at Porter Family Stadium. The kids were able to interact with the coaches and players and after some warmup worked on different skills with drills covering running the ball, tackling, agility and more.
"It was a great day for Highland football program to give back to the community of Highland and our Alumni and their kids. We enjoy being able to have our student-athletes share their passion for football with the kids and have our coaching staff interact with the kids, too. We hope to continue to have the minicamp for the kids for years to come as part of the Alumni Games events," said Head Football Coach, Aaron Arnold.
Also going on that morning was the annual alumni run with the cross country teams running along with Alumni and Highland community members. Leading the race was a pair of new Scottie runners as Vicente Correia won the men's race and De'Janay Davis led the way in the women's race.
The rest of the day featured alumni interaction in Ben Allen Fieldhouse along with alumni games for volleyball, women's basketball and softball. The volleyball matchup saw the 2019 Scotties take the court against the Alumni and the current Scotties took the match in three sets 25-6, 25-14, 25-15. Later in the afternoon, the women's basketball team put on a scrimmage with their players and a few alumni with the Grey team capturing the 68-53 win over the White team; the contest marked the second year for a women's basketball contest on Alumni Day. During halftime of the women's basketball game, the Scottie Cheer and Dance squads showed off a few routines and were joined by some Alumni for the performances. The Alumni Game events wrapped up with the annual softball contest as the current Scottie softball team earned the 11-0 win over the Alumni in the contest.
The day wrapped up with the annual street dance which featured live music and gave Alumni, Highland community members and everyone a chance to continue to enjoy the day, capping a day of fun.
"It's always great to have all the Alumni back on campus for the Alumni Games. I love seeing them reminisce about their time as a Scottie and hear all the great stories about their college experience. The event is a great opportunity for Highland to showcase the school's growth and engage our Alumni and community, giving them an opportunity to meet the current group of Highland students," said Sports Information Director, Mike Smith.
