EdSights Scottie Chatbot: Help is just a text away!

Highland Community College students now have campus resources just a text away.

EdSights, an education technology company, has a chatbot that allows HCC staff to check in on hundreds of students at once via text message and connect them to resources they need. At Highland, his name is Scottie, and he is here to answer student questions and direct them to the right place.

HCC’s “behaviorally smart” chatbot engages in two-way conversations. The artificial intelligence tool can communicate with students, sending and receiving text messages to ask how they’re progressing and whether they need support in a multitude of areas such as academics, mental health, social engagement and employment.

Depending on the student’s responses, they will be directed to an advisor or a set of resources. If a student response meets a certain threshold, an alert will be sent to college administrators so they can intervene.

Dr. Eric Ingmire, HCC vice president for student services, said, "We are thrilled to partner with EdSights to enhance the student experience at Highland Community College. This innovative platform will allow us to proactively support our students, ensuring they have the resources and guidance they need to succeed both academically and personally. At HCC, we are committed to student success, and EdSights aligns perfectly with that mission."

Without this automated system, staff and advisors would have to reach out to students one-by-one, which can be time-consuming. Students also may not feel as comfortable disclosing their current situation in person. A text is a great way to check-in and go deeper with student interaction and support, if needed.

The chatbot was introduced to Highland campus and online students Monday, Oct. 14. The opt-in program was implemented in an effort to support students at the College. EdSights monitors trends in reported student struggles and provides data to the school, which administrators use to help with strategic planning.
