Scottie Men Begin Conference with 2-0 Record
The Highland Community College men’s basketball team is off to their best start in conference play under Head Coach Jerre Cole. The Scotties downed Region VI D-II rival Johnson County on Wednesday night at home by the final of 71-66. On Saturday, Highland rallied for an 87-84 road victory at Independence.
Johnson County came to Highland leading the Scotties by two games in the Region standings on Wednesday night. In the first half, neither team took control, and at halftime, the Cavaliers held a slim 37-36 lead. In the second half, the Scotties took over, jumping out to an early double digit lead and held on in the final minutes for the win.
Sophomore De’Andre Upchurch (Flint, MI) led the Scotties with 24 points. Sophomore Roderick Camphor (Baltimore, MD) had 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomores Phil Henry (Marlton, NJ) and Brandon Stacker (Overland Park) had 12 and 10 points respectively.
On Saturday night at Independence, the Scotties fell behind early, trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half before surging back to knot the score at 38 at halftime. In the second half, the Scotties again burst out for an early 14-point lead with 10 minutes left to play in the game. The Pirates rallied to get the game close, thanks in part to several Scottie turnovers. With just a minute to play, sophomore Antonio Walker (Dublin, GA) sprinted back for a game-saving block with the Scotties up just two points, and they held on for the victory.
Upchurch again led the Scotties with 27 points, splashing six 3-point baskets. Camphor had a great shooting night, hitting nine of 14 field goal attempts for 24 total points. Walker registered another double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The Scotties, now 8-5 overall and 2-0 in Jayhawk East Conference play, next host Kansas City Kansas Community College on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Allen Field House.
