Every year, Sarah Windmeyer, the director of financial aid at HCC, embarks on a mission to educate local high school families about navigating the complex world of financial aid. Her informative presentations invite senior students and their parents to explore vital topics such as financial aid sources, college costs, and tips for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

This year, Windmeyer is scheduled to visit 13 high schools across the area, including Marysville, Atchison, Lawrence Virtual, Doniphan West, Atchison County (Effingham), Sabetha, Onaga, McLouth, Nemaha Central, Oskaloosa (along with Pleasant Ridge and Jefferson West), Hiawatha, Troy, and Riverside. With seven presentations held in October and six more planned for November, attendance has significantly exceeded previous years, averaging around 20 participants per session.

Reflecting on her first visit to Marysville High School, Windmeyer noted, “We had 24 families represented, totaling over 30 attendees, including a paraprofessional from their elementary school who is considering returning to college. The high school counselor was thrilled with the turn out and expressed a desire to have me back annually.”

To ensure that all interested families can benefit from the information, Marysville High School recorded Windmeyer’s presentation for parents unable to attend. Similarly, Windmeyer recorded her session with Lawrence Virtual School, sharing the video with other schools to extend its reach.

“I genuinely enjoy getting out into the community,” Windmeyer shared. “Educating families about financial aid—an often complicated and confusing topic—is incredibly fulfilling. Completing the FAFSA is essential for most students pursuing post-secondary education, and I’m happy to help demystify the process. Knowing that I’m aiding students in achieving their goals makes all the late nights worthwhile.”

Through these efforts, Windmeyer and Highland Community College continue to make a significant impact on families seeking guidance in financing their educational journeys. HCC’s mission to provide economic development to enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve lives on.
