Highland Women Run in Half Marathon Championship

Members of the Highland Community College women’s cross country team competed in the 2012 NJCAA Half Marathon Championship on November 17 at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. The Championship was a 13.1 mile run through the town, campus, and nearby highway. Bands played throughout the course, and crowds were large for the event that had over 200 participants.
Highland’s Mary Kate Taylor (Chillicothe, MO) ran a very aggressive race and finished in ninth place with a time of 1:30:17:50. That time places her as the all-time best half marathoner in Highland history. She moves ahead of 2003 Scottie Christine Ensign on the all-time list, just one place off All American status.
Hannah Olsen (St. Joseph, MO) moves into number four position on the all-time list with a great race time of 1:35: 40:10 and a 34th place finish. Kelsey Warren (Berryton), Highland’s third runner to qualify for the half-marathon team got the flu bug while at the meet, so the Scotties could not field a team. In the “what could have been category,” if Warren had been able to run and finished last in the event, the Scotties would have placed eighth in the nation as a team.
Head coach Tom Bond noted, “If you have not run a marathon or done cross country, you really have no clue how much training and effort goes into the preparation for these events. These girls sacrificed a lot for the College and themselves. This was a special group and season. They trained long and hard from the first of August until the middle of November, putting on countless miles. I’m really proud of this group and their efforts.”
