After winning back to back NJCAA Region VI titles and finishing second in the country this year, the Highland women’s basketball program landed three players on the NJCAA All-American teams. Julia Alves (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Ashley Torres (Morovis, Puerto Rico), and Ryann Bowser (Holton) have been named 1st, 2nd and 3rd team All-Americans respectively by the NJCAA.
Alves, a 6’ sophomore forward, led the Scotties in scoring (14 ppg) and rebounding (9 rpg) as a transfer. She also led the Scotties in 3-point field goal percentage at 35%. The Scotties had to win their Region semi-final and championship game without her as she was knocked out by an elbow to the head in the Region semi-final first half. Alves also made the All-Tournament team at the NJCAA National Tournament. She has signed a letter of intent to attend Arkansas Tech next year.
A 5’6” sophomore guard, Torres capped off a great second season with the Scotties by making the 2nd team All-American. Torres was Highland’s second-leading scorer as well as second on the team in assists.
Bowser, a 5’9’ sophomore guard who has committed to Texas Tech, repeated as a third-team All-American, having also earned that honor as a freshman. She was the only returning starter from the Scottie team that finished 30-6 and 5th in the country a year ago. She led the Scotties in assists and was the leading scorer through the Region and National Tournaments.
“I am so excited for these young ladies, and I think it’s a tribute to the success of our team to have this many players recognized,” said head coach BJ Smith. In the past two years, Highland has had more All-Americans than any other team in the country. The Scotties finished the season 33-3 and an overtime loss 2nd in the National Tournament.
