The Highland Community College men’s basketball team won its fourth game of the year in the first road test against North Central Missouri College by the final score of 79-68.
The Scotties, 4-0 overall, built a solid 17-point halftime lead and needed every point as they held on in the second half for the win. The North Central Pirates chipped the Highland lead down to seven points with four minutes to play, but the Scotties answered with two timely treys from freshmen James Walker (Detroit, MI) and Martell Collins (Milwaukee, WI). Freshman Kris Smith (Beaumont, TX) capped the victory with a dynamic drive and dunk down the middle of the lane late in the second half.
The Scotties were led in scoring by freshman Jaleni Neely (Chicago, IL) with 14 points. Smith and Collins both scored 11 points in the win.
“We looked very good in the first 10 minutes of the game. They did not have an answer for us on either end of the court,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “However, just like in our game against North Arkansas, we look up at the scoreboard and see a big lead, and suddenly we don’t want to keep playing for some reason. For us to be successful in January and February, we will have to change that.”
The Scotties next travel to Region VI Division II and Jayhawk Eastern Conference foe Fort Scott Community College on Tuesday, November 20 for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
