Highland Community College marked another milestone in its esports program by hosting a highly competitive Overwatch LAN tournament at the Walters Wellness Center Friday, Oct. 25. The tournament attracted nine colleges, with a total of 12 teams participating in the all-day event.
Represented colleges included Buena Vista College (Storm Lake, Iowa), Cornell College (Mount Vernon, Iowa), Hesston College, Highland Community College, Iowa Western Community College (Council Bluffs), Kansas State University’s Varsity and JV teams (Manhattan), Missouri Baptist University (St. Louis), Pratt Community College’s Varsity and JV teams, and the University of Kansas’ Varsity and JV teams (Lawrence).
The University of Kansas (KU) Varsity team emerged victorious, clinching first place after a hard-fought series of matches. Cornell College secured second place, while Missouri Baptist University claimed the third position, triumphing over the KU JV team, who finished in fourth.
HCC Esports head coach Matt Ludwick expressed his appreciation for the support that made the event possible, stating,
“I want to thank our IT, marketing, multimedia, Walters Wellness Center personnel, maintenance, and the College as a whole for their support.” He added, “I’d also like to thank our season sponsors—Rainbow Communications, Amberwell, Pierce Heating and Cooling, and Stardust Awards & More. We are grateful for the wonderful support of the community.”
Building on the success of this tournament, Highland Community College esports is preparing for its upcoming Sunflower Showdown, set for Friday, Dec. 13. The event will bring high school esports teams from across Kansas to compete at HCC, promising another thrilling showcase of gaming talent.
