Highland Community College’s Arts in the Barn series will host 2 workshops introducing the art of blacksmithing to the public on April 27.
The event, Pound-in on the Farm, will be split into a 9 a.m. till noon session demonstrating the basics of the blacksmithing trade to beginners. Participants will learn about coal forges, anvils, and tools of the trade. At the end of the morning, session participants will have produced a nail. In the advanced afternoon session, held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., participants will continue to hone the craft and will create an “S” hook or a wall hook. In order to participant in the advanced session, participants must have attended an introduction session.
The fee for the introduction class is $10. The advanced class is $20. All participants must be at least 12 years of age and safety glasses are required. For more information or to RSVP call 785-336-1274 or 785-442-6009 or email lkoch@highlandcc.edu.
The Klinefelter Farm located just two miles east of Hiawatha, KS on Highway 36 just off Mulberry Road, is owned and operated by Highland Community College and the HCC Foundation. This beautiful 480-acre farm was a gift to the college from the John M. Klinefelter family and had been in his family for nearly 130 years. The Farm is home to the Klinefelter Barn which is home to the Arts at the Barn series, a self-supporting and non-profit cultural event series held annually.
