Cynthia Jacobson, Director of Highland Community College’s nursing program, recently addressed the Kansas Broadband Conference to inform the participants on the College’s use of broadband in its Allied Health, Medical Office Assistant, and Nursing programs. The theme of the Conference was the use of broadband in the educational process, connecting students with the world beyond search engines. As part of a state initiative, colleges are using technology to reduce costs, expand resources, and enhance learning. Jacobson was able to contribute to what different broadband- based technologies are being used across Kansas, how are they impacting the educational environment, what are the benefits, and the costs associated to derive those benefits.
Sponsored by the Kansas Department of Commerce, the Broadband Initiative has three primary goals: to Innovate (develop strategies to deploy creative broadband solutions), to Educate (bring together Kansas leaders in schools, libraries, health care, business, and government), and to Advocate (examine the current state and future of broadband connectivity). Additional information about the Initiative can be obtained at http://www.kansascommerce.com/index.aspx?NID=360.
As Director of Nursing at the College, Jacobson manages the Nursing Program; Medical Office Assistant Program; and Allied Health Division. She has been instrumental in developing online courses in all of these programs and is an advocate of seamless education opportunities within the healthcare field.
Jacobson has been a registered nurse for over thirty-five years. She has been active in health information technology since 1993 and was one of the first twenty-five nurses in the nation to become certified in nursing informatics. Her corporate employment experience includes the Mayo Clinic Hospital, Cerner Corporation, and Argus Health Systems, Inc. a company of DST.
Jacobson holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Science in Nursing – Education Specialty from Western Governors University.
