BOT Lowers Tuition, Fees for Early College

The Highland Community College Board of Trustees approved a new tuition and fee rate of $65 per credit hour for Kansas high school students at their March meeting.
The reduced rate is a significant cost savings compared to the previous $147 per credit hour for high school students and their families making higher education more accessible across the state.
Starting in the summer 2024 semester, this lower rate will apply to high school students taking in-person classes on Highland's campuses, at partner high schools or through HCC’s Online program.
According to Sara Smith, Assistant Dean of Instruction of Early College, the new rate aims to expand access to early college opportunities, particularly transferable general education courses.
“Students who choose to enroll in college classes while in high school make considerable progress toward their college education if the appropriate time and focus are given to their studies,” Smith said. Students should check with counselors about dual credit eligibility and class schedules before enrolling. While the $50 per credit hour rate will lower costs, a $15 per credit hour fee will cover textbook expenses; Highland utilizes a rental textbook system to maximize savings. Some career technical education courses will remain tuition-free for high schoolers through the state's Excel in CTE program.
