Alyson Gobin received her high school diploma from Doniphan West High School Saturday, May 13. This Friday, she will also graduate with an Associate in Arts degree from Highland Community College. Aly began taking college classes the second semester of her sophomore year in high school. She completed most of her HCC classes online.
“I found many benefits of taking concurrent college courses. You save a lot of money-- even if you only take a couple of classes. It also gives you the chance to meet new people. I also took some On-Campus classes and liked being in a new learning environment,” she stated.
When asked how taking concurrent classes in high school prepared her academically for college Alyson stated, “While all colleges are different, [taking concurrent classes] gives you the chance to see how professors and coursework differ from high school courses and as a result, you won’t go into college expecting it to be the same. I thought that taking concurrent classes would be super difficult. It was challenging to be a full-time high school and college student, but I think it was worth it to gain knowledge and save money! It just took a lot of drive and time management.”
In the fall, Alyson plans to attend Concordia University in Nebraska to double major in behavioral science and psychology. She will be the first in her immediate family to attend a four-year university. After earning her bachelor’s, she plans to start working in child welfare as she earns her masters in social work.
