Highland Community College president David Reist received notice from Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honorary society for two year college students, that an HCC student, Obinna (Obie) Muoh, has been selected as a 2016 Phi Theta Kappa Global Leaders of Promise Scholar. This scholarship is designed to provide new international Phi Theta Kappa members with financial resources to help defray educational expenses while enrolled in a two-year college while also encouraging participation in Society programs.
This year’s recipients were selected by a panel of independent judges from more than 1,100 applicants. Phi Theta Kappa Leaders of Promise Scholars are selected based on outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated leadership potential. Muoh, of the Benin Republic in Africa, immediately became involved on the Highland campus on his arrival, helping with the women’s basketball team, serving as an academic tutor, working for Great Western Campus Dining, as a Resident Assistant, and earning the coveted Parish Scholarship, which is awarded by the Highland faculty to a returning student in memory of former faculty member Arlyn Parish. Muoh is currently serving as president of the PTK chapter at Highland.
The Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program was conceived by International Officers and launched in 2001. The program is a result of the Society’s long-range plan, The Alpha Project, which identified the need for scholarships to new Phi Theta Kappa members to assist in their obtaining an associate degree, while also encouraging participation in Society programs. Today, the Leaders of Promise Scholarship is more relevant than ever as PTK colleges and communities are actively encouraging completion of a college credential, an associate degree, or certificate among community college students.
