The Highland baseball team won five of six conference games last week, taking two wins Wednesday, March 27, over Independence Community College in games played in Emporia, KS. Then traveled to Parsons, Kansas on Friday, March 29, where the Scotties took three of four games from Labette Community College over the week-end.
On Wednesday, in game one, Andrew Mercer (Newfoundland, Canada) pitched five strong innings and Justin Paul (Papillion, NE) went three for three with three RBIs as the Scotties defeated Independence Community College 9-2. Tyler Goldsberry (Omaha, NE) also had three hits for HCC while Craig Hill (Morris, OK) and Joe Mancuso (Papillion, NE) had two hits each, and Jordon Oddo (Grain Valley, MO) hit a two run home run.
In game two, Highland trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but exploded for nine runs, taking advantage of four walks and five hits in the big inning. Alex Head (Topeka) and Jordon Oddo each had two run doubles in the inning and Justin Paul hit a three run triple as the Scotties defeated the Pirates 10-4. Nick Sarmiento (Saginaw, MI) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out six in picking up the win. Tyler Goldsberry had three hits to lead Scottie hitters, while Paul had four RBIs.
In game one against Labette, Justin Paul pitched a complete game two hit shut-out, striking out seven Labette batters, and the Scottie offense scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third inning, and two in the fifth inning as HCC defeated Labette 5-0. Tyler Lane (Papillion, NE) had two hits and two RBIs to lead HCC hitters, while Joe Mancuso and Craig Hill (Morris, OK) had two hits and one RBI each.
For game two against Labette, Derek Rottinghaus (Seneca, KS) pitched a complete game, allowing just one run while striking out three and the Scotties scored four runs in the third inning, as HCC completed the double header sweep over Labette with a 5-1 victory. Tyler Goldsberry and Andrew Standish (Millard, NE) both had RBI hits in the inning, and Alex Head had a two run hit. Tyler Lane had an RBI single in the fourth inning to plate the Scotties’ fifth run. Standish and Lane both had two hits in the game.
In game three against Labette, Justin Paul went five for five with a double, home run, and five RBIs to lead HCC’s seventeen hit attack in a 13-3 victory over Labette. Alex Head had three hits, while Tyler Goldsberry and Andrew Standish had two hits and two RBIs each. Taylor Hendrick (Springfield, MO) picked up the win, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
In game four against Labette, Labette took advantage of four walks and two hit batters to score eight first inning runs and went on to a 13-3 victory, snapping HCC’s six game winning streak. Justin Paul’s three run home run in the third inning accounted for the Scottie runs in the final game of the series.
