Jerre Cole led a successful HCC Men’s Basketball program and now enters a new role within the Scotties Athletic Department. The Washington, Kansas native is a mission-driven leader who has been named the new Director of Athletics at Highland Community College. His new role will begin June 1, 2023. 

President Deborah Fox said, “The College is pleased to announce the hiring of Jerre Cole as the new athletic director. Coach Cole has an extensive background in college athletics. We are certain he will dive right in and get to work immediately.”

Cole earned an associate degree from HCC in 1991. Then, he attended Missouri Valley College where he majored in secondary education. After earning his bachelor’s, he attained his master’s degree in physical education from Emporia State University. 

 

Cole started his coaching career as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Porterville College from 1996-2001, head coach at Peru State College from 2001-2005, assistant basketball coach at Garden City Community College from 2006-2008 and head coach at Lamar State College-Port Arthur in 2009 where he oversaw the transition from NJCAA DIII to DI.

 

Cole came to Highland in 2009 and served as the HCC men’s basketball head coach until his transition to athletic director. During his time at HCC, he led the Scotties to two NJCAA Region VI titles, two KJCCC championships and two NJCAA tournament appearances over the past decade and built the Scotties into an NJCAA Region VI powerhouse. 

 

“I want to thank President Fox, the board of trustees, the selection committee and the coaching committee for this opportunity. I am ready to change from the coaching side to the administrative side. I am excited to get started,” said Cole.
