The Highland Community College volleyball team recently hosted a high school tournament at the Walters Wellness Center on the Highland campus. The tournament consisted of six teams from the surrounding area: Horton, Nemaha Valley, Hiawatha, Axtell, and two teams from Mound City, MO. The competition was fierce as all the teams had a chance to play each other.
In the end, the team from Horton came out on top, defeating Nemaha Valley in three sets (25-17, 19-25, 15-8). Highland found the tournament to be successful as the goal was to get these high school teams an ample amount of playing time before their regular season starts in the fall. HCC hopes to continue this tournament and make it into an annual event with more high school teams participating each year.
The Highland volleyball team also will be hosting a Skills Camp on July 23 and 24. There are three sessions to choose from: Session 1 from 9:00 to10:30am will cover Hitting and Blocking; Session 2 from 10:45am – 12:15pm will cover Defense; and Session 3 from 1:00 to 2:30pm will cover Setting. All sessions will cover the fundamentals of each area and dive further into each specific position. Please register for this event as there will be only 20 spots per session to insure individual instruction.
Also, on Tuesday, July 30, the Highland team will be hosting a Senior Day for any senior girl who is interested in playing volleyball at Highland Community College. The day’s events include: meet and greet with coaching staff, tour of campus and facilities, admissions and financial aid speakers, lunch with 2013 team. Please register for this event.
