HCC Class of 1973 Returns to Campus

Members of the HCC class of 1973 gathered in the Library Saturday, Oct. 14, to reminisce and reconnect with HCC classmates. Classmates provided bios for a short memory book with an update of their life after Highland. Many members of the class of ‘73 mentioned fond memories and a time of personal growth while here.
When reflecting about attending Highland Community Junior College (HCJC), Robert (Bob) Brainerd said, “It was a magical place for me.” He said he moved about eight times during his high school years and didn’t have the time to get to know anyone really. “High school was kind of lonely for me,” shared Bob. “After surviving all that, HCC was heaven sent.” He said getting to know his classmates, learning who he was and what he liked, was simply a blessed experience. Bob said the small college and provincial little town shaped him in a way that he needed to grow. “It was just what the doctor ordered,” he stated.
After the class gathered at the HCC Library, they toured campus remembering their days as a student, instructors who taught them, friendships they made, new additions to campus and were surprised by how much it’s changed. The Alumni Association hosted the group to lunch at Kirkwood and Co. Table & Tap where they were welcomed by HCC President Deborah Fox and enjoyed a performance by The HCC Lads & Lassies under the direction of Shayna Leahy. Alums were also able to visit with Scottie football alumni and friends at Kirkwood being hosted by HCC Alumni Association Board members, Coach Marty Allen ’66 and Barb Morrow ’84. After lunch, classmates gathered in Porter Family Stadium for a reception during the HCC Homecoming football game verses Independence in which the Scotties got the win.
“This class was a joy to host to campus. They had such love for HCC, their instructors and classmates. They were so grateful to be back on campus and had the best stories about their time here,” reflected Kelly Blevins Twombly ’83, Director of Alumni Relations.
