Scottie Baseball Splits with Coffeyville

The Highland Community College baseball team split with Coffeyville Community College in a four game series over the weekend, winning both games on Friday by scores of 9-5 and 5-4, before falling to the Ravens on Saturday 14-12 and 6-1.

In game one, HCC trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the third inning where the Scotties exploded for four runs on five hits, with the big blow being a three run home run by Justin Paul (Papillion, NE) giving HCC a 5-3 lead.  Coffeyville scored a run in the top of the fifth inning, narrowing the lead to 5-4, but the Scotties again answered in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs on four hits, extending their lead to 9-4.  Alex Head (Topeka), who homered in the second inning, had an RBI single and Royce Behar ((Bartlesville, OK) had a two run double in the inning.  Derek Rottinghaus (Seneca) pitched a complete game for HCC, allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out four in picking up his first win of the season.

In game two, Taylor Hendrick (Springfield, MO) pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings in relief and Andrew Standish (Millard, NE) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie, and the Scotties held on for a 5-4 win.  HCC jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI double by Justin Paul, a sacrifice fly by Joe Mancuso (Papillion, NE), and a balk.  The lead was short-lived as the Ravens took advantage of three walks and scored four runs on a two out grand slam, taking a 4-3 lead.  Alex Head’s RBI double in the third inning tied the game at 4-4, setting the stage for Standish’s game winner.  Hendrick allowed only three base runners, after entering the game in the second inning, while striking out six batters.

In game three, Coffeyville scored five runs in the first inning and three runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead, but the Scotties took advantage of three walks and two hit batters to explode for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth, with the big blow coming from Andrew Standish’s (Millard, NE) grand slam, giving HCC a 9-8 lead.  After a scoreless fifth inning, the Ravens scored three in the sixth inning to regain the lead at 11-9.  Andrew Standish’s solo home run in the bottom of the inning put the Scotties back to within a run, going into the seventh inning.  Coffeyville widened their lead to 14-10 in the top of seventh, scoring three runs on a walk and three hits.  HCC tried to rally in the bottom of the inning, getting three straight hits to plate two runs, narrowing the gap to 14-12, but could not continue the rally.  Standish had three hits and five RBIs for HCC in the game.

In game four, HCC pitchers walked eleven batters, enabling the Ravens to score single runs in each of the first, third, and fourth innings, then added three runs in the seventh inning to defeat HCC 6-1.  Andrew Standish had two hits for HCC, but the Scotties were limited to just four hits in the game.  Standish finished the four game series going nine for thirteen (.692) with three home runs and seven RBIs.  Jesse Richel ((Morris, OK) went five for eleven (.455), Alex Head went five for twelve (.417) with a home run and four RBIs, Tyler Goldsberry (Omaha, NE) went five for fourteen (.357), and Justin Paul had five RBIs.  The Scotties are now 3-7 in league play and 5-12 over-all.
