Highland Track Competes at Conference Championships
Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Highland Community College had outstanding personal performances at the 2015 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Eastern Division Championships held at the BG Products Veterans Memorial Sports Complex in El Dorado. The women compiled 39 points to place fifth among the Eastern Division members and the men finished with 48 points to finish sixth.
For the women, coached by Tom Bond, Courtney Armon (Farmington, MO) led the team with a second place finish in the 3000 m steeplechase and sixth place finish in the 1500 m run. She was followed in the 1500 by teammates Kalli Morland (Louisburg) in seventh and Skylie Hughes (St. Joseph, MO) in eighth. Allie Simonin (Wathena) took third in the heptathlon, winning the shotput portion of that eight-event challenge. Other top ten performances included Jennifer Hall (Carbondale), sixth in the 800 m run; Chelsea Gabriel (Grain Valley, MO), fifth in the 100 m hurdles; Taylor Smith-Brown (Coral Springs, FL) sixth in the high jump; Briley Ware (Dexter), sixth in triple jump; and Riley Hanik (Centralia) fifth and Kassidy Blevins (Highland) seventh in the javelin.
Brian Martinez (Pasadena, TX) continued his stellar season by winning the 10,000 m run. Teammates coached by Chad Clevenger with top ten finishes were Tyus Jacob (Topeka), seventh in both the 200 and 400 m dashes; Deandre Jobe (Baytown, TX), fourth in the 400 m dash; Ronnie Carroll (Wilmington, DE) fifth in the 800 m run; Derrick Zaldivar (Topeka) third and Coner Reed (Highland) seventh in the 1500 m run; Christian Salazar (San Antonio, TX) fourth in the 3000 m steeplechase; and two third place finishes by the 4x400 and 4x800 m relay teams. The 4x400 team was Ronnie Carroll, Jeandre Job, Eric Mellenbruch (Soldier) and Tyus Jacob. Carroll, Derrick Zaldivar, Mellenbruch, and Fernando Lecero (Albuquerque, NM) ran the 4x800.
