HCC Faculty Selected for Bauer and Bruning Awards

Three HCC faculty were selected as winners of $1000 for professional development for the coming year.
Pamela Fulbright and Mary Bryant, English instructors on the Highland Campus, were awarded the Bauer Awards. The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) supports teaching and student learning at all levels of English instruction, holds conferences, publishes a wide array of journals and generally provides up-to-date analysis and support in light of rapid changes in our educational and broader culture. The two awards will help HCC English faculty to stay up to date with the information, skills and overviews to keep student learning at the center of instruction through membership in this professional organization, conference attendance and access to professional journals and other materials.
“We truly appreciate the generous, forward-thinking efforts of the Bauer family and the work of HCC’s Foundation to support us as we strive to meet the needs of our students,” reflected Fulbright.
Bryant added, “Education is changing quickly, and we are grateful for the opportunity to stay on the cutting edge as we continue to develop insightful learning opportunities.”
Carol White, Wamego math instructor, was awarded the Bruning Award. She will use the funding to attend the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) 2023 Conference “Math’s A Hit” in Omaha Nov. 9-12, 2023.
“Through sessions and networking at the conference, I plan to learn more about co-requisite math courses and how to better teach and connect with incoming students,” White stated. “I am grateful for an opportunity to participate in professional development activities. I have been at HCC for 17 years and have enjoyed helping students learn the math they want to know or need to know to reach their goals in life.”
The Virgil ’41 and Lou ’41 Bauer Memorial Fund was established by the Bauer family to support faculty professional development at Highland Community College. Virgil and Lou Bauer were prominent Highland community members, raising their family in Highland. Gene Bauer, one of their sons, is currently the president of the HCC Foundation Board and represents the fourth generation of the Bauer family to serve on a board at the College. Dr. W. M. Boone, great-grandfather to Gene, was an HCC trustee from 1906-1922. Dr. Boone’s statue is prominently displayed in the front lawn of the College.
The Herbert and Emily ’38 Lucas Bruning Award was established to honor Herb and Emily on their 50th wedding anniversary. Emily was a prominent teacher at Highland High School until she married Herbert. Herbert spent a career in education administration in Kansas. Created in 1990, the award reflects the Brunings’ interest in education by encouraging the professional development of HCC faculty in the amount of $1000 annually.
Every year HCC faculty submit applications to a committee requesting professional development opportunities that will improve and positively impact instruction in the classroom. The committee selects recipients from the highly competitive pool of applicants. The College would like to thank our donors and their families for supporting HCC faculty and students through their gifts. Congratulations to this year’s recipients.
