HCC Academic Department Scholarships
Institutional scholarships and awards are primarily reserved for Kansas students attending classes on the main campus in Highland. Students attending the technical center and living on campus or with parents/guardians in Doniphan County are also eligible for institutional awards. Scholarships are not valid for online classes, whether or not a student is living on campus.
- All academic scholarships must be offered by May 15 for students starting the fall semester of that same year and October 15 for students starting in the spring semester.
- Cumulative and semester GPA requirements for all academic award/scholarships (with the exception of Math/Science) is 2.0. Math/Science cumulative and semester GPA requirement is 2.8. More stringent GPA requirements within departments are allowed, but must be supervised by award sponsor.
- Academic Award/Scholarships are renewable scholarships worth books and tuition starting Fall 2017. Students with institutional scholarships must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours of on campus classes per semester.
- Cumulative and semester GPA requirements for all technical awards is 2.0.
The HCC Agriculture department offers scholarships in the amount of booksl and tuition for those students interested in agriculture careers such as ag economics, animal science, agronomy, forestry, or other natural resources. Students are required to take 6 credit hours of ag courses per academic year and enroll in 12 credit hours per semester. Scholarship students must maintain an overall cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0. Students must also participate in the required ag activities in order to renew the scholarship. The HCC Art department is dedicated to helping talented students gain a solid foundation in the areas of fine art and commercial design. We currently award scholarships in the amount of books and tuition to full time students interested in pursing a career in art or design. Scholarship recipients are required to be enrolled in at least two 3 hour studio art class each semester, assist with HCC Art Day, submit work and assist in the set-up of the annual HCC Student Honors Art Show, maintain a 3.0 GPA in art courses, maintain a 2.0 GPA each semester, and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA. HCC's Athletic Training Department is looking for students who are interested in joining their student athletic training staff while continuing their education at HCC. The Athletic Training Department at HCC directs the health care delivery system used for all HCC student-athletes. Student athletic trainers receive a books and tuition scholarship. A minimum of 12 semester hours, a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0, and participation in one athletic training course per semester is required in order to renew both the student athletic training position and the scholarship each semester. The Business Department at Highland Community College offers books and tuition scholarships to full-time students interested in a career in Business. Students need to enroll in 6 credits of business each semester, maintain a grade average of "C" or above in all business classes, maintain a cumulative and semester 2.0 GPA overall, and be an active member of one of the business clubs available on campus. The Scottie Cheerleaders perform at all home football and basketball games. This spirit group at HCC is composed of cheerleaders, yell leaders, and a mascot. These individuals work together to lead cheers and promote school spirit. Scholarships in the amount of book rental and tuition are awarded through a try-out. Cheerleaders, yell leaders, and mascots must maintain a cumulative and semester 2.0 GPA and enroll in the practice class and weight training class assigned to that group. The Criminal Justice Department offers books and tuition scholarships for students interested in law enforcement, corrections, court services, victim advocacy, pre-law, etc. The scholarship requirements include, a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0, at least one CJ course per semester, and participation in departmental sponsored community service projects. The scholarship is renewable for four subsequent semesters excluding summers and in adherence with the aforementioned criteria. The Classy Lassies Dance Team performs at all home football and basketball games. This performance group emphasizes developing technical and choreography skills used in performance. Scholarships in the amount of books and tuition are awarded through auditions. A dance team student must maintain a cumulative and semester 2.0 GPA and enroll in the practice class and weight training class assigned to the dance group. The Doniphan County Trustees Award may be awarded to any student graduating from a Doniphan County High School (Doniphan West, Riverside, or Troy). As a graduate of one of these schools, a student can automatically qualify for a books and tuition scholarship.
Students are required to enroll full time on the main campus at Highland, enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester (excluding online hours), and maintain a minimum of 12 credit hours with a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0 or higher (excluding online hours).
Students attending the Technical Center in Atchison and living on campus or with a parent in Doniphan County may also qualify for the Trustees Award.
The Trustee Award may not be combined with any other HCC scholarship.
Students attending the Highland campus with the Trustees Award must select one of the following areas in which to participate:
- Athletic Training
- Criminal Justice
- Early Childhood
- Music (Vocal)
- Personal Fitness Training
The student must maintain the specific requirements of the chosen academic department in addition to the general institutional guidelines stated above.
All academic scholarships must be accepted by May 15 for students starting the fall semester of that same year and October 15 for students starting the following spring semester.

HCC’s Education Department award is worth books and tuition for students who want to pursue a career in education. The student must enroll in Introduction to Education as well as Lab 1 & 2. In addition students wanting to maintain this scholarship must be an active member of the education club and maintain a 2.0 cumulative and semester GPA while enrolled at HCC. Early Childhood awards books and tuition scholarships for students who:
- Pass a Criminal Background Screening and maintain a clean criminal record.
- Enroll in at least two Early Childhood courses per semester (excluding summer).
- Enroll in 12 or more credit hours per semester on the Main Highland Campus. Preference is given to those currently working with young children.
- Maintain a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0 overall, and 2.5 GPA in Early Childhood coursework.
- Work in the Early Childhood Program Office 10 hours per semester.
- Student progress is evaluated by the Program Coordinator.
- Successfully complete all Early Childhood Courses.
- Successfully complete ECH 250 Early Childhood Practicum with a B or better.
- Successfully complete all of the required coursework for the Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood from Highland Community College, and fulfill all of the requirements for a degree from Highland.

The Math/Science Department of Highland Community College offers academic scholarships to students who are presently enrolled in math and science courses in high school. To receive a scholarship, students must have an ACT math score of 22 or an ACT science score of 20, maintain a minimum course load of 12 hours, enroll in a minimum of one College Level (College Algebra or higher) math or science course each semester, and maintain a 2.8 cumulative and semester GPA. The Media Technology Award is given to outstanding new students who are interested in pursuing a career in media technology. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: photographing campus events, designing and creating HCC yearbook, editing images/videos for community cable station, and other projects as needed. Media Technology students must have a high school GPA of 2.75 or higher. Submit (or email) an application letter that includes your career goals, reasons for interest in this program and other factors that relate to your ability to benefit from an award. Include (or email) with the application a letter of recommendation from a previous instructor or an appropriate associate. A student receiving a Media Technology award must enroll in and complete 12 or more credit hours each semester, maintain a 2.0 cumulative and semester GPA. Music awards are offered year-round to both music majors and non-majors interested in participating in vocal music at HCC's main campus. Awards are offered in the amount of book rental and tuition. Students are required to participate in either HCC Chorus or Lads & Lassies, enroll in a minimum of 12 hours, maintain a 2.5 GPA in all music coursework, and a 2.0 cumulative and semester GPA. Awards are also available to students interested in accompanying for our performance groups or sound technicians. This program is designed for individuals seeking or desiring employment as a personal trainer. Students will be provided with a solid background in the areas of fitness, nutrition and wellness. Students will be prepared to complete the National Council on Strength and Fitness personal trainer exam.
Scholarships are worth books and tuition. Requirements for the Personal Training Program are as follows: An enrollment minimum of 12 hours is required. Students must have an overall 2.0 cumulative and semester GPA. Students must be enrolled in the courses outlined in the Personal Fitness Trainer degree sheet. The photography department is seeking individuals interested in obtaining coursework with the intention of pursuing a professional career in the field of photography. The department offers the Associate of Applied Science degree in Commercial Photography and the Associate of Arts in Studio Photography. Departmental scholarships worth book rental and tuition are available and are awarded upon reviewing of a photography portfolio. Scholarship recipients are required to take 4 credit hours of photography coursework per semester and maintain a minimum 3.0 (B) GPA in the core photography classes and a 2.0 cumulative and semester GPA. HCC’s sophomore academic scholarship honors academic excellence. This sophomore level scholarship is for students who are returning to HCC or transferring from another college. This scholarship may be awarded to a student who has earned 30 or more hours of college credit with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher and have passed 67% of attempted classes. Students must also be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) at the Highland campus or half time at the Tech Center and half time at the Highland campus. The Sustainability Award is based on an interest in environmental issues facing current and future generations. Students receiving the award are required to be enrolled in 14 hours each semester and maintain an overall cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0. They also must take Environmental Science in a fall semester and Contemporary Issues in Sustainability in a spring semester and achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 in these classes. In addition, students are required to work a minimum of three hours each week in the HCC garden, composting, recycling, or other related activities, and should take an active role in the student Go Green Club. The HCC theatre department offers scholarships in the amount of books and tuition for theatre non-majors and majors, both in performance and technical aspects of play productions. Technical aspects include carpentry, lighting, sound, costuming, and stage management. Students are required to participate in all theatre department productions, maintain a 2.0 cumulative and semester GPA, take four hours of theatre credit course per semester as assigned, maintain full-time student status, and reserve afternoon rehearsal times (3:00-5:30 M-F) in their schedules.
