Highland Community College is proud to announce that its innovative Scottie Gold Initiative has been named the recipient of the 2026 Outstanding Undergraduate Adult Learner Program Award by the NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Adult Learners and Students with Children Knowledge Community.

This prestigious national recognition honors programs that go beyond traditional student services to remove barriers, foster belonging and drive measurable outcomes for adult learners pursuing higher education.

The Scottie Gold Initiative was designed to reconnect and support adult learners who previously stopped out before completing their degree. Through the program, eligible students may receive up to 12 credit hours tuition-free, along with personalized advising, streamlined re-enrollment support and targeted financial assistance. By eliminating financial obstacles and simplifying the path back to the classroom, Highland has helped dozens of students return, persist and complete their credentials.

“Community colleges are uniquely positioned to change lives,” said Dr. Vincent Bowhay, President of Highland Community College. “The Scottie Gold Initiative reflects our belief that it is never too late to finish what you started. This award affirms our commitment to meeting adult learners where they are and helping them cross the finish line.”

Since its launch, the initiative has led to increased re-enrollment, improved completion rates among adult learners and renewed engagement across Highland’s nine-county service area. Many program participants are working adults, parents and first-generation college students balancing multiple responsibilities while pursuing their academic goals.

The recognition from NASPA places Highland among a select group of institutions nationwide leading the way in adult learner success and strategic enrollment innovation.

The award will be formally recognized at NASPA’s national conference later this year.
