Welcome to Highland

Starting college is an exciting milestone — and at Highland Community College, we’re here to help you begin your journey with confidence. As Kansas’s first community college, Highland offers a tradition of academic excellence, small class sizes, and a supportive environment where you’ll feel seen, challenged, and prepared for what’s next. Whether you plan to earn a degree, transfer to a university, or explore your interests, HCC provides the foundation for your success.

First-time freshmen are students who have never attended college after earning a high school diploma or GED. Admission to HCC is open to all students who meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of an accredited high school diploma or GED
  • Submission of official high school transcripts (or GED documentation)
  • Completion of the HCC Online Application for Admission
  • ACT, SAT, or placement testing for course placement (scores are not required for admission but help determine appropriate class levels)

Once your application is submitted, you’ll receive instructions to complete placement testing if needed and to connect with your academic advisor for enrollment.

Your success starts before classes begin. All new students participate in a new-student orientation designed to help you transition to college life. You’ll meet faculty and staff, learn about student resources, and finalize your class schedule.

Each student is paired with an academic advisor who helps you choose courses, explore career paths, and stay on track toward your goals. From tutoring and mental health support to financial aid counseling and campus engagement, Highland’s Student Support Services team is dedicated to helping you thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Highland offers one of the most affordable college experiences in the region. By completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) — using Highland’s school code 001921 — you can access federal grants, loans, and work-study programs.

In addition to federal aid, HCC provides institutional scholarships based on academics, athletics, technical programs, and leadership involvement. Payment plans are available to make managing tuition even easier. Our Financial Aid Office can help you explore all your options to make college affordable.
