M 101 Music Fundamentals (3)

Reviews the rudimentary subject matter of music including symbols, rhythm, and scale construction. Individuals will be introduced to reading and dictation in two or three parts, the minor modes and chromatics, eye and ear study through the simple modulations and transpositions.

M 103 Music History and Apprec (3)

This course is an Introduction to music as an art form. The basic elements of music, and significant style periods will be studied, as well as significant composers. Music as self expression is also a course emphasis.

The aural study of melodies, intervals, harmonies, rhythms, and meters.

M 105 Applied Keyboard I (1)

Prerequisite: TST005 - Instructor Permission

M 200 Music Theory I (3)

Prerequisite: M 101 - Music Fundamentals, TST005 - Instructor Permission
A study of the harmonic systems used in musical composition from 1650 to 1900, including mastery of scales, keys, intervals, rhythms, and basic triads. Simple, four-part will be studied. Students will be introduced to triad inversions, non-chord tones, secondary chords, and dominate seventh chords. Students will analyze chorales, hymns, and representative literature from recognized stye periods.

Individuals will continue to identify patterns in music in order to analyze harmony and form. Along with regular assignments and examinations, individuals will compose one short hymn tune.
