Highland Celebrates Homecoming 2013

The Highland Community College Alumni Association hosted Homecoming 2013 activities at the College on October 5.  The day’s activities began at the Library with alumni registration.  Alums had the chance to renew acquaintances and visit, and tours were conducted until 11:00, when Kelly Twombly, Director of Alumni Services and members of the Alumni Association Board of Directors hosted the Golden Graduate honored class of 1963 and guests in the Library for a luncheon, which included special guests Bill and Barbara Walters who joined the festivities having traveled from College Park, MD.  The luncheon was followed by a short program that included a presentation from HCC President David Reist, who brought the class up to date on College activities since they graduated.

Following the activities in the Library, the focus shifted to Kessinger Field where the Scotties hosted the Red Ravens from Coffeyville Community College.  The Golden Grads joined a reception for all Highland alums in the Barber Room of the Stadium Center and watched the Scotties defeat the Red Ravens on a glorious fall afternoon.

Highland Holds Hall of Fame Induction

Highland Community College held its Athletic Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies on Sunday, September 15, in the Walters Wellness Center on the Highland campus.  With approximately 175 people in attendance, the College inducted Clarence “Fuzz” Lewis, former football, basketball, and track standout; Glenna Batchelder, former volleyball coach and instructor; and Marty Allen, a former football, basketball, and track athlete at the College, as well a former football and women’s basketball coach at HCC.

These inductees demonstrated outstanding athletic achievement, coaching, and other noteworthy accomplishments in the athletic programs at Highland Community College.  Following a luncheon, the inductees were introduced at halftime of the Scottie football game where a reception was held in their honor.  Plaques honoring the inductees will now hang in the Athletic Hall of Fame wall in Allen Field House.

Highland Hosts Successful Alumni Games

Highland Community College welcomed back record numbers of graduates and friends for its annual Alumni Games event on August 17.  Over 100 alumni registered to participate in the games, which pit alumni who played the sport against the current Scottie squads, and many more played, but just didn’t register.  In addition, the HCC Alumni Association had 26 volunteers who assisted Kelly Twombly, Director of Alumni Services, and Administrative Assistant Stacy Simmer in the administration of the Games.

Alumni Games began at 9:00 with registration in the Barber Room of the Scottie Stadium Center.  Registering alums were able to spin the KNZA wheel to collect Highland memorabilia.  The Games then started at 10:00 am with a 5K run of cross country runners.  Baseball followed at 11:00 am and volleyball at noon.  Softball filled the rest of the afternoon and all these contests proved to be highly competitive.  The day’s activities concluded with a controlled scrimmage of the current football team.  Unofficially, the day’s activities actually concluded with informal gatherings downtown at Ernie’s as alums shared memories of the good ol’ days.
