The Highland Community College softball team is returning to the National Tournament after a one year absence after winning the NJCAA Region VI, Division II, District E Championship on Tuesday following a two-day rain delay. The Scotties defeated Independence 2-1 after two extra innings to advance to the National Tournament.
Tied 1-1 at the end of the regulation seven innings, the two teams continued to match dominant pitching performances, with Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year Dominque Sprengers (Holland) holding the Pirates scoreless in the ensuing two innings, and fellow Jayhawk First Team All-Conference Team member Morgan Balderas (Wichita) getting the game and championship winning sacrifice fly for the Scotties to score Kelsey McIntyre (Independence, MO) from third.
The NJCAA National Softball Tournament will be held May 18-21 at Traceway Park in Clinton, MS. Those games that are allowed to be streamed can be accessed from the Highland website at www.highlandcc.edu. There are two ways to then get the games: click on the softball banner at the top of the homepage or go to Athletics and then Sports Stream Live.
