published June 30, 2022Western Center Students Pass Boilermaker Welding Test

Two Welding Technology students from the Western Center in Baileyville passed the Boilermaker Local 83 welding test. Peyton Gerstner and Sebastian Kirk, both of Frankfort completed the welding technology program this May. Both completed a super coupon 6G test – TIG root and 7018 fill and cap. This welding test is the top of the American Welding Society (AWS) standard. Gerstner and Kirk are working to become indentured into the apprenticeship program. Previously, three additional Western Center students have completed this welding test.

Gerstner and Kirk not only completed the HCC Welding Technology program this May, but both also graduated from their local high schools at the same time. Cara Baker, HCC Western Center Director said, “It takes a real commitment to attend the Western Center for half a day, every day, for two years. To graduate high school and complete the HCC certificate program is a huge accomplishment. These young men represented our program well in their completion of the Boilermakers welding test.”

The welding program at HCC is a nine-month certificate program for students enrolled full-time in the program. Students learn all types of arc welding processes: metal arc welding (stick), gas shielded arc welding (wire), gas tungsten arc welding (tig), oxy-acetylene welding (gas), plasma and carbon arc cutting, blueprint reading and pipe welding.

The American Welding Society (AWS) was founded in 1919, as a nonprofit organization with a global mission of advancing the science, technology, and application of welding and allied joining and cutting processes worldwide, including brazing, soldering and thermal spraying.
