Glen Dunkin, of Kansas City, Missouri, a graduate of Highland Community College Technical Center (HCCTC), placed second place in the Industrial Motor Controls competition at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Championship. The national skilled trades championship was held in Atlanta June 21-23. The annual SkillsUSA conference was a showcase of career and technical education where more than 5200 outstanding career and technical education students -- all state contest winners -- competed hands-on in 108 different trade, technical and leadership fields.

Other Highland students attending the National Competition were Kalab Ridout (Electrical Construction), of Highland; Keaton Henning (Electrical Construction), of Lancaster; and Kaitlynn Tolbert (Automotive Refinishing), of Camden Point, Missouri. Ridout placed fourth in the Electrical Construction competition.

During the SkillsUSA competition, the students worked against the clock and one another, proving their expertise in occupations such as electronics, computer-aided drafting, diesel technology, medical assisting and culinary arts. All contests are run and judged by industry professionals using industry standards for employment. More than 1200 industry judges participated this year.

All winners receive medallions and frequently receive tools of their trade and/or scholarships to further their careers and education. The SkillsUSA Championship is for high-school and college-level students who are members of SkillsUSA. To qualify for the national competition, the students competed in local and state contests. The state gold winners advance to the National SkillsUSA Championships.
