Scotties Split with Indy

The Highland Community College baseball team went 2-2 in Conference play this past week, winning home games 12-10 and 19-12 on Thursday, March 13, and then losing two games 2-3 and 6-7 on Saturday, March 15, on the road versus Independence Community College.

In game one, Highland scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on RBI hits by Sam Brooks (Bay City, MI) and Jaylen Jenkins (Topeka), and then a sacrifice fly by Royce Behar (Ponca City, OK) to erase a 10-9 deficit to take a 12-10 win.  Highland led most of the game, as Jaylen Jenkins’ (Topeka) two run home run capped a four run first inning.  After Independence scored three runs in the top of the third inning to narrow the lead to 4-3, Royce Behar (Ponca City, OK) hit a grand slam to give Highland an 8-3 lead after three innings of play.  Independence then scored three more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings, and one run in the top of the sixth inning to take a brief 10-9 lead.  Josh Moore (Bartlesville, OK) pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.

Game two was much like game one, as outs were hard to come by.  Highland scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 9-7 deficit on RBI hits by Evan Smith (Wichita), Sam Brooks (Bay City, MI), and a two run single by Royce Behar (Ponca City, OK) to give Highland a 12-9 lead.  Independence wouldn’t go away as they plated two runs in the seventh inning making the score 12-11.  Jaylen Jenkins’ (Topeka) three run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning extended the lead to 15-11, and then Highland put the game away with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on RBI’s by Aaron Seele (Silver Lake), and Justin Paul (Omaha, NE), and then Sam Brooks’ two run single for the 19-12 Highland win.  Scott Shinn (Rossville) pitched two solid innings in relief for the win.

In game one at Independence, Highland was limited to just three hits, and Indy scored one run in the third inning and two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead.  Highland tried to rally in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out, and scored two runs on a sacrifice fly by Justin Paul, and Aaron Seele’s steal of home to make the score 3-2, but Highland was unable to get anything going in the seventh inning and lost the game 3-2.  Clayton Tiffany (St. Joseph, MO) pitched five and one-third strong innings for Highland but took the loss.

In game two, Highland held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but two errors led to a four run inning for Independence as they took a 5-3 lead.  Highland quickly tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning as Justin Paul scored on a wild pitch and Evan Smith hit an RBI double.  Sam Brooks’ RBI single in the top of the eighth inning gave HCC a 6-5 lead.  Independence hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, then scored the game winner on a one out walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning for the 7-6 win.  Brett Norris (Atchison) pitched six strong innings for Highland, allowing three earned while striking out seven batters.  Aaron Seele and Sam Brooks each had three hits each for Highland, while Justin Paul and Zach Roberts (Morris, OK) each had two hits.
