Scotties Eliminated in Region Playoffs

The Highland Scotties were eliminated from the NJCAA Region VI playoffs Sunday as Hutchinson Community College hit four home runs in taking a 12-7 win in the elimination game.

The Blue Dragons led 3-0 going into the top of the fifth inning when the Scotties tied the game at 3-3 on a two run single by Derek Hammer (Rossville), and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Goldsberry (Papillion, NE).  Hutch quickly regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs to go back on top 5-3.  After the Scotties tied the game again at 5-5 on an RBI ground out by Craig Hill (Morris, OK), and another RBI single by Hammer  in the top of the sixth inning, the Dragons responded in the bottom of the inning, hitting a solo home run to start the inning, and then a three-run home run to take a 10-5 lead.  They then added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a passed ball and bases-loaded walk to stretch the lead to 12-6.  Jesse Richel (Morris, OK) had an RBI double for the Scotties in the ninth inning to make the score 12-7.

Highland pitchers walked nine batters in the game, and committed two errors, opening the door for scoring opportunities for the Dragons.  The Scotties out hit Hutch 15-11 in the game, with Jordon Oddo (Grain Valley, MO) leading HCC with three hits.  Jeremy Monty (Colorado Springs, CO), Jared Hawkins (Wathena), Craig Hill (Morris, OK), and Derek Hammer had two hits each.  The Scotties ended the year with a 28-30 record.
