Scottie Volleyball Falls to Red Ravens
The Highland Community College volleyball team traveled south to play the Red Ravens of Coffeyville Community College on September 21. The Ravens had a 2-1 conference record and 17-1 overall record on their season so far. The Scotties were on a three game win streak and looking to seek out another tough Conference win.
The first set of the match went south for the Scottie volleyball team as they buried themselves with mistakes. Sophomore Shailey Caudle (Atchison) had three key kills to help give the Scotties momentum, but the Red Ravens took control and came out with the first set win, 25-12.
Leslie Polanco (Dominican Republic) kept the Scotties in the second set with four early kills. But the Ravens took back the control and the lead which forced the Scotties to a timeout at 9-14. The fight to gain back the lead continued with great digs by Polanco and Megan Rhule (Holton), but the team could not find their groove and had to take their second time out at 15-21. Caudle and Tyrecia Lukes (Homestead, FL) helped earn a few more points with kills at the end of the set, but the Red Ravens came out with the set win 25-20.
Lukes opened up with the third set with a block and two kills, but the team was halted early once again with their own errors and let the Red Ravens take the lead 5-9 at the Scotties’ first timeout. A handful of Caudle's kills brought the Scotties back within 2 at 10-12. The Ravens went on a three point streak, causing a timeout for the Scotties. After the timeout, the streak finally ended at 10-17. The Scotties closed the gap but ran out of leverage and ended up losing the last set 21-25.
Caudle led the team in kills with 11 and added in six digs, followed by Polanco with seven kills on only 10 total attacks and one error, making her hitting percentage an impressive .600.
The Highland volleyball team is now 9-5 on the year and 2-2 in Conference play. They are currently sitting sixth in the KJCCC Standings. Their next game will be played in Fort Dodge, Iowa in a triangular on Friday, September 23, against Iowa Central Community College and Dakota Country Technical College.
