Scottie Softball Splits Season Opener

The Highland Community College softball team traveled to Atchison to take on the Benedictine Ravens in a double header for the 2013 season opener.  In the first game, the Scotties fell behind 2-0 in the fourth before the offense got going.  Freshman Kaley Pyles (DeKalb, MO) homered to deep center field to jumpstart the Highland offense.  The Scotties added three more unanswered runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead.  Everything looked good for a Highland victory heading into the bottom of the seventh until the inexperienced Scottie defense faltered. Three errors in the inning led to three unearned runs, allowing the Ravens to take game one 5-4.

Pyles led the offense for Highland, going 2-2.  Emma Hill (King City, MO) was 3-4 with two stolen bases, and Morgan Crenshaw (Belle Plaine) was also 2-2.

Game two proved to be a battle of the offenses.  Both teams managed to score six runs in the first three innings. With the scored tied at 6 in the fourth inning, Highland Coach Heidi Jordan turned to freshman pitcher Taylor Hatfield (Mulvane) to slow down the Raven offense.  Hatfield managed to limit the Ravens to only one run over the final four innings, giving the Scottie offense the opportunity to take over.  Highland scored five runs in the final two innings including a second home run by Kaley Pyles in the top of the sixth inning.  The offense was once again led by Pyles and Hill who both went 3-5 in the game.  Highland’s next action will come in its home opener on Wednesday, February 20, at Scottie Park.
