Scottie Softball Earns Split at Benedictine

The 2012 Highland softball team took the field for the first time this past Saturday, earning a split at Benedictine College. In game one, Zuzana Kudernatschova (Czech Republic) picked up right where she left off last spring on the mound. She pitched a complete game two hit shutout in a Highland 4-0 win over the Ravens. The Scotties put their first run on the board with a Kudernatschova single, scoring Katie Yoder (Shawnee) in the top of the first inning.

The rest of Highland’s runs came in the top of the fourth inning. With the runners on first and second, Kayleigh Foxcroft (Omaha, NE) picked a great time to hit her first career home run. That 4-0 lead was more than enough for the Scottie defense as it would only allow two more base runners the rest of the game. Jessie Troupe (McLouth) was 2-4 with a double, and Foxcroft had a homerun and 3RBIs.

After a dominant game one, the Scotties could not seem to match the intensity in the second game. The Ravens struck first by putting up four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of several Highland defensive mistakes. The Scotties tried to claw back into the game, but the Raven offense, combined with all the Scottie defensive mistakes, proved too much for the Highland to overcome, resulting in a 12-6 game two loss. Offensive leaders for game two were Jessie Troupe and Baylee Dillon (Grapevine, TX) each going 2-3 with a double and a homerun.

The Scotties will next travel to Fort Worth, TX on February 24th for a five game tournament before returning home on February 28th for their home opener in a Jayhawk Conference matchup against KCKCC.
