The Highland Community College men’s basketball team rolled to their first win of the 2013-14 season with a 78-53 home win over the Central Methodist University Junior Varsity Eagles.
The Scotties, 1-0 overall, used a strong first half to build a 47-24 halftime lead. In the second half, Highland seemed to lose focus and the Eagles used good ball movement to cut the Scottie lead to 16 points before a late surge put the game away.
The Scotties were led by sophomore Martell Collins (Milwaukee, WI) with 32 points and 10 rebounds. Transfer sophomore Torre’ Somerville (Washington, DC) had a solid first game as a Scottie with 15 points, eight steals and four assists.
“We played well the first half with a lot of guys contributing toward a big halftime lead,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “Unfortunately, we fell into the trap of focusing on the scoreboard instead of putting an entire game together. We did not shoot the ball well from the perimeter, but we did rebound the ball well and got to the foul line a lot, which was a good sign.”
The Scotties next play in the Kansas City Kansas Community College Classic on November 8-9. Highland plays On Point Academy (OK) on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and will take on North Arkansas College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
