The Highland Community College baseball team got a break from Conference play and came away with a doubleheader sweep over Southeast Nebraska. Highland had played only one non-conference game out of their last twenty-nine games due to weather and Conference make-up games.
In game one, the Scotties scored four runs in each of the first and second innings, and went on to a 9-6 win. Joe Mancuso (Papillion, NE) had an RBI single and Jordon Oddo (Grain Valley, MO) had a two run double in the Scotties’ four run first inning. Justin Paul’s (Papillion, NE) three run home run capped the four run second inning, giving Highland an 8-1 lead. Mancuso added a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Scotties’ final run. Brock Miller (Lakin, KS) pitched four solid innings in picking up his second win of the season.
In game two, Tyler Goldsberry (Omaha, NE) had three hits and two RBIs, and Jacob Hollenbeck (Papillion, NE) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings, leading Highland to a 7-6 victory. The Scotties held a 6-3 lead heading into the fifth inning, but Southeast got three straight two-out hits to tie the game at 6-6. The Scotties regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on Goldsberry’s two out run-scoring double. Hollenbeck made the lead stand, pitching out of a seventh inning jam, striking out the final two batters with runners at first and second. Andrew Standish (Millard, NE) and Justin Paul each had two hits and a RBI for Highland.
