Scottie Baseball Clinches Playoff Spot

After suffering two tough losses on Saturday, the Highland Community College baseball team rebounded to take both games Monday, April 30, defeating Fort Scott 5-1 and 5-4 in eight innings to clinch a playoff spot in Region VI Sub-Regionals May 5-7 in Chanute, with Hutchinson as the first opponent.

After rain postponed play on Sunday following the losses on Saturday, Highland and Fort Scott resumed play on Monday, April 30, and the Scotties got just what they needed as Jared Hawkins (Wathena) pitched a one hitter and Jeremy Monty (Colorado Springs, CO) had three hits to lead HCC to a 5-1 victory, clinching a playoff spot for the Scotties.  Fort Scott took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a walk and a throwing error, but Hawkins was dominant the rest of the game, allowing only a fifth inning double, while striking out seven Greyhound batters.  HCC got all the runs Hawkins needed, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI ground-out by Andrew Standish (Omaha, NE) and an error gave HCC a 2-1 lead.  Standish’s  RBI single in the fifth inning extended the lead to 3-1.  The Scotties then put the game away on RBIs from Jeremy Monty and Jordon Oddo (Grain Valley, MO) in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The final game of the series was another extra inning game, and the Scotties rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning for four runs to take a 5-4 walk-off win.  Taylor Holz’s (St. Marys) bases loaded double plated two runs to make the score 4-3.  Then Derek Hammer (Rossville) hit a RBI single to tie the game, Jeremy Monty (Colorado Springs, CO) came up with the game winning RBI on a long sacrifice fly.  Ethan DeVader (St. Marys) pitched seven strong innings for the Scotties, allowing only a first inning run before two errors opened the door for the three run eighth inning for Fort Scott.  Josh Glenn ((Overland Park) picked up the win, pitching out of the eighth inning jam without further damage.

HCC ends regular season play 15-21 in Jayhawk play, and 27-28 over-all.
