When Mack Porter learned that Kearney High School student Louis Etuale was not planning to attend college following graduation, he contacted Dr. Craig Mosher, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Highland Community College. Porter and Mosher have been working together for years helping area music and theatre students attend the College in memory of Porter’s wife, Mary Helen, who excelled in those areas when she was a student at Highland. Through Porter’s assistance, Etuale will be attending Highland in the fall to continue studying art and playing football. Etuale will be the first in his family to attend college.
“Throughout our married life, Mary Helen and I enjoyed supporting our community and helping kids achieve their dreams. I’ve seen how Louie contributes to his teams here at Kearney and how his teammates respond to him. Talking with Coach Jones, I knew Louie would be a good fit at Highland. We already have a scholarship fund established in Mary Helen’s name at the College, so Dr. Mosher worked it out that we can help Louie get started. With Louie’s artistic abilities, I know Mary Helen would have loved that.”
For Etuale, middle guard on Kearney’s state championship football team, it is an opportunity he wasn’t sure he was going to get. “I thought about going to college, but when I didn’t get any offers, I was planning to go to work and maybe someday use my art. Now, thanks to Mr. Porter, I’m looking forward to going to college, having the chance to further develop my art skills, and continuing to play football.”
