HCC’s Vocal Music Instructor, Shayna Leahy, directs Lucia di Lammermoor for the New York City Opera.

"It is such an honor to be able to collaborate with a group of world-class musicians, and I am so fortunate to be able to be challenged with new ideas and creatively inspired by other professionals,” said Leahy.

The show stars the world-renowned soprano Sarah Coburn, the captivating tenor WooYoung Yoon, and the legendary bass-baritone Mark Delavan. It is conducted by four-time Grammy winning City Opera Music Director Maestro Constantine Orbelian and features members of the New York City Opera Orchestra in a one-night-only performance.

Of the experience Leahy stated, “It means so much to me to be able to share these perspectives and experiences with my students and to expand their horizons of what can be achieved and the opportunities available for them after their time with me at Highland Community College.”

To describe the show, think Romeo and Juliet set in Scotland. Donizetti’s brilliant score is said to be the height of drama and the pinnacle of the Bel Canto style in this abridged version.

“Being able to work professionally in my field helps me keep my expectations high for what I believe my students can and will accomplish as we work together in the classroom," said Leahy.

The performance is in Bryant Park this Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. EST. For those outside the area, it will be live-streamed and may be viewed after the show on the Bryant Park YouTube channel.
