Highland Women Win Two in Meuller Classic

The 2015-16 women’s basketball team at Highland Community College started its season in great fashion this past weekend, beating Bacone 113-38 and Missouri Valley 77-58 on consecutive days in the Bill and Annie Mueller Classic.

“With so many freshmen on our team, getting started and getting started strong is important. We have a lot of work in front of us,” said head coach BJ Smith.

The Scotties were never threatened in their opening night versus Bacone College out of Oklahoma as they jumped out to a 22-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Freshman Abbey Harrel (Boyd, TX) hit seven 3s, which is one away from the school record and the 113 points was fifth on the list of most points scored.

In the second game of the season, the Scotties struggled a little more as they got behind Missouri Valley early 7-4 before taking a 39-23 lead into the locker room at the half. “Our dam has a lot of holes in it right now and consistency is sure enough one of them. With so many new faces, getting them to be consistent will be imperative,” said Smith.

Missouri Valley hung around and closed the gap to 12 with six minutes remaining before Highland pulled away to win 77-58.

Highland’s (2-0) next game will be a double header on Wednesday, November 7 vs. Little Priest at 5 pm, with the Highland men following at 7:00.
