Highland Women Successfully Start Region Play

The 2011-12 Highland Community College women’s basketball team came out the blocks quickly in region play as they jumped ahead of the Hesston Lady Larks 13-0 and never looked back, cruising to a 73-42 victory on the road to push their record to 5-0.

Playing on the road for only the second time this season, the Scotties used pressure defense to cause 19 turnovers in the first half and a 33-18 half-time margin. "Our kids really had a lot of intensity and played with a lot of purpose in the first 10 minutes of the game.  On the road that is always important, especially in a Region game," stated head coach B.J. Smith.

The second half saw much of the same as the Highland women continued to push the tempo and stretched their lead to the final margin. Kathy Thomas (Flint, MI) led all scorers with 22, and 10 of those came on a 10-10 night from the free throw line.  Sharniece Lewis (Warrensburg, MO) and Royce Shields (KC) had 19 and 10 coming off the bench. "Our team is a long ways away from where we want to be, but we are really working hard to get better every day.  We have players contributing every day in practice to our work ethic," Smith said.

The Highland women are back in action at home Tuesday, November 22, against Southwestern Iowa at 6:00 p.m. in Allen Field House.
