Highland Women Run Well at National Marathon Meet

Three members of the Highland Community College women’s cross country team participated in the NJCAA National Half Marathon Championship on the Silver Comet Trail in Dallas, GA, on November 19, hosted by Chattahoochee Technical College.  The National Half Marathon is a 13.1 mile race and 23 colleges were represented.   The three Highland runners finished together and achieved an eleventh place finish.

Freshman Mary Kate Taylor of Chillicothe, MO finished as the number 44 runner in the National Meet with a time of 1:44:56.95.  Sandy Ewing, a sophomore from St. Louis, MO had a time of   1:44:57.02, which put her in the 45 position, with finisher 46 being Farmington, MO freshman Taylin Person, who had a time of 1:44:57.17.  Those times moved the three to positions six, seven, and eight on the HCC All-Time Records list.

Coach Tom Bond noted that his charges “ran together and finished together, a great accomplishment for all.   The first results that came out had us at nine, but they miscalculated.  Ranking by times instead of place bumped us down.  It was a good effort by these three and well worth the trip.”

Bond continued, “I might add there are a lot of training miles necessary to do the marathon.  Taylin and Mary Kate will continue to train for the full Lincoln marathon in May which is 26.2 miles.”
