The Highland Community College volleyball team won its season opener against Cloud County Community College. The match was a struggle throughout, and the Scotties had the fight to finally win in five sets. Cloud took the first set 25-14; Highland came back in full force taking set two, 25-20; lost the third set 18-25; and won set four 25-20. In the fifth set, the score was tied 5-5 before a rotation error for Highland gave the Thunderbirds the lead at 7-5. After that, the Scotties took control with a 15-9 victory.
Sophomores, Erica Rottinghaus (Seneca) and Kelsee Wright (Topeka) both had 11 kills for the night. Rottinghaus added a block and four aces while Wright had a solo block and one assist block. Veronica Pitchford (Manhattan) contributed nine kills, three blocks, and an ace, while McKayla Brezina (Seneca) added seven kills, a block, and an ace.
The Scotties start conference play Wednesday, August 29, at Fort Scott Community College. The match will be played at 5:30 p.m.
