Highland to Host Healthy Food Conference at Klinefelter Farm

Community food producers, small and large, throughout Northeast Kansas are invited to the Brown County Healthy Food Conference hosted by Highland Community College, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Northeast Kansas, on Thursday, December 12, at the College’s Klinefelter Barn located at 1774 230th Street in rural Hiawatha.  Take the Mulberry Road exit off Highway 36 and turn east on the access road north of the highway until you see the Farm entrance on your left.

This Healthy Food Conference is focused on Local Food Production for Fun and Profit and will show participants how to market their products using local outlets.  The Conference will get underway at 10:00 am on December 12 and conclude around 4:00 pm.  The registration fee for the Conference, which includes lunch and materials, is $30; $40 after December 5.  A registration form and additional information can be obtained at the Community Foundation of Northeast Kansas website at commfoundofneks@gmail.com.  Fees may be paid the day of the Conference.

The program is designed for local vegetable producers and hobby gardeners interested in marketing to local sources and farmers markets.  Multiple sessions are available for individuals who are just getting started and also those who are seasoned growers and gardeners who are looking for tips and techniques.  Session topics include Effective Marketing, Growing Vegetables for Local Markets, Business Models for Maximizing Profits, Options for a Community Land Bank, Hiawatha Farmers Market Report and Planning, Good Agricultural Practices, and the Importance of Attracting Beneficial Pollinators.
