Highland Staff Trained for Title IX Requirements

Several members of the Highland Community College Equity Grievance Panel attended training at the Heartland Campus Safety Summit on November 3 & 4 at Johnson County Community College. Those in attendance on one or both days were: Cara Baker, Therese Crary, Angie Eberly, Peggy Forsberg, Eileen Gronniger, Alice Hamilton, Margy Heddens, Di Hinrichs, Lucas Hunziger, Tyler Nordman, Lisa Parsons, Sam Perkins, Stephanie Peterson, Alex Petock, Dr. Cheryl Rasmussen, Erin Shaw, Sarah Simmons, Jason Stegman, and Michael Stonebarger.  These Highland employees represent a cross section of administrators, athletics, faculty, security, staff, and regional.

Title IX Investigator Training took place on Tuesday morning followed by three breakout sessions in the afternoon. Topics were:

Understanding the Intersection Between Title IX and the Clery Act

Mentors in Violence Prevention: A bullying and Gender Violence Prevention Model with a Bystander Intervention Component

Prevention Programming: Two Models of Peer Education

Later in the day, several team members participated in a film screening and facilitated discussion of "The Hunting Ground." The film is a groundbreaking expose of rape crimes on US college campuses, their institutional cover-ups, and the devastating toil they take on students and their families. Annie E. Clar and Andrea L. Pino, victim activists featured in the film, led the discussion after the film screening. They also presented the opening keynote on November 4th.

CNN will be airing the film on Thursday, November 19 at 8:00 PM and will follow it with a round table discussion. The College will be providing a film screening for all of the HCC community later this year. Other Keynote Sessions included an address by Dr. Deborah Wilson, Associate Athletic Director at George Mason University, who spoke on Athletics' Role in Creating a Safe Campus Culture, and Kelly Parker and Dr. Heather Lambert speaking on behalf of Jana's Campaign http://www.janascampaign.org.

Breakout Session titles throughout the day on Wednesday dealt with prevention programing, engaging men on campus to prevent gender violence, climate survey and development, stalking, Title IX Campus Obligations, and moving beyond compliance to doing what's right on campus.
