Highland Softball Preparing for 2012 Season
In only a few short days, the Highland Community College softball team will take the field in its first games of the season. Coming off a record-setting season in 2011 which saw the Scotties win a second straight Region 6 title, the team has high aspirations for this year. Coach Heidi Jordan, in her eighth season leading the Scotties, believes the returning starters from last season will be the key for Highland.
It will all start on the mound with Zuzana Kudernatschova (Czech Republic), and Katie Slibowski (Lathrop, MO). “As my only returning pitchers from 2011, these two will be a huge part of how far this team will go this season,” states Coach Jordan. Freshman Lauren Massey (Lawrence) will also see extensive mound time for the Scotties. “Lauren will do good things for us on the mound this year, but will need some time to grow as a pitcher. Zuzana and Katie will have to do their jobs well so we aren’t forced to put Lauren in situations she is not ready for yet.”
There will be a lot of new faces on the field for the Scotties this season; Highland has only five returning sophomores from 2011. Megan Dortch (Kearney, MO) and Kayla Gritt (Arlington, TX) are the other full time returners from last season. Lindsay Fatherly (Tonganoxie), Mackenzie Knight (Tonganoxie), and Megan Wright (Topeka) all saw playing time last season, and will have to play bigger roles this year. Coach Jordan is hoping that her newcomers to the program can be solid additions to her sophomores. Skyler Gentry (Fort Worth, TX), a transfer from Texas Wesleyan University, will see a majority of the shortstop duties. Baylee Dillon (Grapevine, TX) transferred to Highland from Paris Junior College and will play first base and be a designated hitter for the Scotties. Freshmen Jessie Troupe (McLouth), Megan Plouvier (Shawnee Mission), and Raven Nolan (Topeka) will fill out the rest of the infield.
Katie Yoder (Shawnee) will split time between infield and outfield, Kayleigh Foxcroft (Omaha, NE) and Addie Billinger (Ellinwood) will complete the outfield roster for Coach Jordan.
Offensively this should be a much improved Scotties lineup. The additions of a significant amount of power should produce a much better pace than a year ago. It is an exciting time for Highland Softball with the dawn of this new season. “This season could be one full of ups and downs. If the team can find a way to come together on the field, we will do very good things. At the same time will we have a lot of new faces in the lineup, and we need to find ways to limit our mistakes.”
