Highland Community College head softball coach Heidi Jordan has announced the signing of seven high school seniors to join the Scottie softball team in the fall of 2013. Coach Jordan believes that these seven student-athletes have demonstrated all the qualities necessary to carry on the strong tradition of Highland softball.
Sydney Buster (Wamego, KS)
Buster comes to Highland as a four year member of the varsity team at Wamego High. During her career, Buster has ranked among the top twenty pitchers in the state of Kansas for batting average and top thirty among first basemen. Last season Buster helped her team to a 23-1 record and birth to the Kansas State Playoffs. She has lettered in softball and academics for her entire high school career. Buster will help solidify the infield and add power to the middle of the Scottie lineup next season.
Emily Clontz (Grapevine, TX)
Clontz is a four year starter for Colleyville Heritage High, with her best year coming as a junior. She set the school record for batting average in a season with an average of .560, leading to her being named to the All-District team. In the classroom Clontz excels in chemistry. Coach Jordan will look for Clontz to play a key role in the offensive lineup and split time at several different positions.
Madison Demel (Goddard, KS)
Demel is a versatile player who can play key roles in many infield positions. In her playing career at Eisenhower High, Demel was named to the All-League team as both a shortstop and a third baseman. Demel maintains a high academic standard as well by being a member of the National Honor Society.
Brie Newman (Omaha, NE)
Newman was a four year player at Gretna High School. After joining the Highland squad next fall, she will be asked to use her great athleticism to fill many roles for Coach Jordan. As an infielder, Newman could see time at several different positions. She will be looked upon to step in and immediately help fill voids left by departing Scottie sophomores.
Taylor Phillips (Ashland, MO)
Phillips compiled an impressive high school resume at Southern Boone County High as their starting pitcher for the past three seasons. She was named to the All-Conference Team three times, All-District three times, All-Region twice, and was a First Team All-State selection in 2012. Her teammates selected her as the team MVP in both 2011 and 2012 seasons. In the summer of 2012, Phillips’s summer team won the 16U USSSA World Series in which she was voted the World Series Pitching MVP.
ShyAnne Robinson (Atchison, KS)
Robinson is a two year starter at Pleasant Ridge High School as a third baseman and catcher where she was named to the All Delaware Valley League Team. She spent her summers playing at the highly competitive Gold level as a member of the KC Peppers and Team Kansas. Robinson excels in the classroom as well. She received a certificate for Outstanding Achievement on reading assessment, and was on the Honor Roll her junior and senior year. Coach Jordan will need Robinson to help with the catching duties next season to fill the void of departing sophomore Jessie Troupe.
Jordann Smith (Wichita, KS)
A second baseman and outfielder for Andover Central, Smith was the 2012 World Series MVP and her team won the Championship. A varsity letterman for three years, her leadership skills extend beyond the field as she is Vice President of Student Council as well as President of Kids for Kids club and an active volunteer in her community. Her high academic standards have made her an honor roll student, and ACE Award winner, and member of Quill and Scroll. Her speed and agility will be used to benefit the team in many ways next fall. Jordann's athleticism will be used on the infield and outfield.
Katelynn Smith (Wichita, KS)
Smith is currently a senior at Bishop Carroll High School, where she has competed in four different varsity sports. In her four years of softball, she was named to the Wichita All City First Team as a pitcher, as well as the Kansas Coaches Association All State team. Smith helped lead her team to a 5A State Championship while in the circle.
