Highland Receives Title III Grant

Highland Community College officials have received official notice that the College is a recipient of a federal Title III grant – the only new award in Kansas –of approximately $2.2 million over the next five years.  The College will use the grant to develop and deliver its Precision Agriculture program throughout its service area and also to enhance its ability to provide technical education programming on the western side of that service area.

In looking for ways to meet the needs of its stakeholders, one option was the development of a Precision Agriculture program to educate both current farmers and students about the technical options and applications available to them to enhance crop production and harvest.  The College will be partnering with area ag businesses throughout the nine county service area of Northeast Kansas to promote and offer this high-profile program for not only the area, but for the state of Kansas.

The 2008 merger of the Northeast Kansas Technical College with Highland has allowed the College to provide more technical education opportunities to its stakeholders.  However, many of those opportunities are place bound in Atchison, so Highland officials have been looking for ways to expand those opportunities on the western side of its service area.  Receipt of this grant will allow them to explore options for developing a Western Technical Center to meet the technical education needs of stakeholders in that area.

The grant proposal was written by a College team led by Dr. Cheryl Rasmussen, Vice President for Student Services at the College. There were approximately 35 of these grants funded this year out of around 1300 applicants.
