Highland PTK Sponsors Scream into the Night for Meals on Wheels

The Highland Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honorary society of two year colleges, got the Halloween season going in a positive direction by sponsoring Scream into the Night on Tuesday, October 28.  Members of the Highland Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Alpha Zeta Gamma, initiated the event and got in contact with the Doniphan County Council on Aging to raise money for the Meals on Wheels program.  Scream into the Night was a Halloween-themed 5k scary fun run/walk that raised $1,100 to support the Meals on Wheels program.  Seventy-four participants screamed into the night on the scary fun run/walk as PTK students were dressed up in costume to make the 5k a long, haunted route.

Prior to Scream into the Night, PTK co-sponsor Margy Heddens noted, “We are looking forward to this being a fun event for all just before Halloween,” and the event proved to be just that in addition to raising the funds to support Meals on Wheels.  Dr. Harold Arnett, Director of Institutional Research at the College, provided the participants with fresh apple cider from his hand-cranked apple press, and the HCC Theatre department did an awesome job of dressing up in costume and scaring the participants during the run/walk.  Other support was provided by the Highland volleyball team and Phi Theta Kappa members who did a wonderful job helping out and were on the course directing participants and scaring them.  Also, the Highland police department helped by directing traffic during the 5k.  Heddens expressed her appreciation for all the support the event received and was pleased with that PTK was able to assist the local Meals on Wheels with a fun and successful event.  “This proved to be something that was a win-win all around:  our students were able to see how to organize an event and the amount of work involved to make it successful, the participants had a truly enjoyable time supporting us, and Meals on Wheels gained some additional support.”

In addition to the College support, sponsors of the Scream into the Night event included the Blevins family, Travis and Amanda Clary, Collins Law Office, Fastenal, Highland Bank, Highland Rehabilitation Center, Two Timbers, and Wathena Rehabilitation Center.
